Jeremy, Gilbert (from Yelp.com)

I think it helps to do a little research online and get an idea of what this floatation tank stuff is all about instead of just walking in and jumping in head first. You are laying in a tank of Epson water, if you want to spend the entire hour focusing on the fact that you’re in the dark, naked, lying in water, it’s weird, and you’re spending money on it, then you probably won’t get much out of it. Google “isolation tanks” and “benefits of Epson salts”. Also, check out a few YouTube videos, especially from Joe Rogan http://y2u.be/KeqmKwsvM58. Like he says, “LET GO”.

I go into the pod thinking “this is mind and body therapy” and letting my mind relax and wander. I take advantage of the oxygen bar before and after if possible. I also take a long hot shower before and after the float. It is good to clean off all of the body’s oils and get real clean before going in and washing the Epson water off after, and hot showers just feel good! I also relax and slow down my thoughts, start taking deep slow Yoga type breaths before the float, and focus my thoughts on drifting off out of reality for a few.

John C. Lilly, a medical practitioner and neuro-psychiatrist, developed the flotation tank in 1954 use to take psychedelics like LSD and Ketamine before going in an isolation tank. I am not sure this is such a good idea to experiment with hard hallucinogens at a place of business / public place but an interesting idea.

Getting in the tank I feel like Mork from that 70’s show Mork and Mindy when he comes to Earth in a big white egg (pod), http://y2u.be/EbEBErvW-Uc HA! I have found that the first 10-15 minutes I am still a little distracted on the whole laying down in a pod experience. Then after 10-15 minutes I start to wander off and trip out a little about whatever is on my mind and sometimes have had dreams, but not sleeping, so I still remember everything when I leave. You know when your session is over when the water filtration kicks on like a waterfall / alarm clock. I have always left the spa feeling calm, relaxed, and de-stressed.

It is hard at first to be awake and not take in any audio, visual, and touch senses. The music may seem like a good idea but I like the idea of giving the senses a break from outside distractions, so I go without. I try to embrace the fact that I don’t have to focus on those senses and let my thoughts run wild. Think about it, ever met a blind person and noticed that because of sight loss they have a very acute sense of hearing? Well what about loss of sight, hearing, and touch? The mind can relax and focus on other processes like inner thoughts, ideas, dreams, or if nothing else just take a break from the everyday sensory input.

It would be cool if True Rest had an unlimited monthly package for under $100 so I could go more. But, compared to buying my own tank, finding a place to store it, maintenance, buying 1,000 lbs. of Epson salts every 6 months, and running water and electricity to the pod all day then I guess the package prices aren’t too bad.

True Rest Spa is in an easy to find, safe location, just off the 101 with plenty of parking. I can usually get an appointment same day which is convenient, and the facility looks to be well kept and clean. The staff has always been kind and courteous. I usually bring my own towel to save a few bucks and my iPod / headphones to listen to some chill music while watching the fish tank at the oxygen bar before and after the float. Say hello to this guy next time you are in http://flic.kr/p/9kFiJn

Float… float onnnnn
Float onnnnn, float onnnnn

Patti Boyce, Phoenix

Have done two floats and both have been wonderful. Very relaxing. I love the feeling of being in the warm water, in the dark and in peace. It does take me about 10 minutes to get my mind to calm down, it feels very “antsy” at first but then all of a sudden the time flies and the session is over! Extra benefit of very soft skin afterwards.

Wish I could somehow do this everyday! I have posted my experiences on my facebook page and others are very intrigued. Hope they will make it in to enjoy the experience.

After many months of wanting, I finally was able to make the drive from Casa Grande. It is definitely worth it. I suffer from an old auto wreck injury and severe tendonitis and it helped immensely. I do have to say my first night of sleep was more REM sleep than deep sleep, but the following few days were great. I had to travel 2 days… after for work, and it definitely relieved a lot of unwanted stress prior to. I highly recommend for anyone with injuries, just plain stress, and in need of relaxation. I agree that next time I would like to have music the whole time but it was still wonderful either way.
Thank you True Rest and team, you guys are very welcoming and truly take great interest in how I felt after. I will be back!!

“This is my favorite discovery of something new and exciting in quite some time and am so glad that I found it!”

I have quickly become a HUGE fan of True Rest! I did a two hour float last night and continue to be impressed with the quality of my experience. I always go with the intention of staying awake because I use this as meditation time—I can sleep at home. The quality and level of my meditation experience only gets better with each float. I continue to sing the praises of this establishment to anyone who will listen and my hope is that they will experience first hand like I have. The staff at True Rest are so friendly and easy to work with. And even though it’s a 30 minute drive one way for my floats, my commute time is so easy because I am SO looking forward to what awaits me. This is my favorite discovery of something new and exciting in quite some time and am so glad that I found it!

“I came out refreshed and felt very good all day.”

My first visit was interesting, I liked that the soap/shampoo/ear plugs, blow dryer, lotions and vasoline were available for me. I liked the pod, although I felt odd at first, I got comfortable quickly, I actually almost fell asleep 3 times and noticed that my respiratory rate dropped substantially, I was breathing very deeply, which I guess is a sign that I was really relaxed. At first my neck was stiff from me thinking I had to keep my head from going under the water. Once I built my trust that I wasn’t going under the relaxation state was easier to get to. I turned the lights out, which I thought would freak me out, but it was okay, I knew where the switch was if I needed it. The time went quickly, it didn’t feel like an hour. I felt like I was in my own private world, I felt safe and it was so completely quiet. I came out refreshed and felt very good all day. The staff member who helped me was professional, knowledgeable and courteous. I bought two gift cards for others to try it too! I will definately go back. Next time, I will take a turbo twisty for my wet hair, some detangler/conditioner and a round brush. I am eager to see how I sleep tonight.

” I highly recommend a membership for anyone needing to de-stress, correct sleep problems, and relieve minor aches and pains.”

My True Rest experiences have been “True-LY” AMAZING! I have been suffering from insomnia for almost 5 years and have finally found something that is helping with my messed-up sleep patterns. I try to get in at least once a month but would love to go more often. It is a solid hour of pure relaxation and pain relief. I also suffer from a shoulder ailment and the flotation sessions seem to really help with that. My body is able to stretch and relax, pain free, and the feeling lasts for weeks. I see now that the good feelings last longer between floats and I always look forward to the next one. I highly recommend a membership for anyone needing to de-stress, correct sleep problems, and relieve minor aches and pains.

“Ten years of chronic, constant pain and in one hour I finally got relief!”

February of 2000 I fell and fractured my spine at the L1 Vertebra. Twice in the next two years I had to have COMPLETE reconstructive surgeries to repair my spine. Initially I was fused from T12- L2, after the second surgery they had removed the 11th rib on my left side, cut through my diaphragm and up my back over my spine and, installed a titanium cage, four rods and 8 screws to finally fuse me from T11-L3. Since the last surgery in 2002, I have had RELENTLESS chronic pain and massive scar tissue growth. I have tried everything short of faith healing to manage it and lasted 8 years without narcotics to control it. After having to succumb to the need for narcotics and running out of options, struggling emotionally, a friend of my wife suggested I try floatation therapy and recommended TrueREST.

I registered for a pain study and had my first float a little over a week ago. I walked in with a pain level OFF the 1-10 scale. For one hour, I floated in a gravity free, blissful frame of mind. When my float ended I exited the pod and showered. While showering I realized that I had NO PAIN. My pain level was ZERO, NADA, NOTHING. I bent over, twisted, stretched and could find NOTHING pain wise. I dressed and moved over to the quiet room where my wife was waiting. She asked how I felt. I sat with a stunned look on my face, a look of COMPLETE DISBELIEF. I told her…I have NO PAIN, its gone. Tears welled in her eyes. This was the first time in the 8 years we have been married that she has ever known me NOT to have pain.

Ten years of chronic, constant pain and in one hour I finally got relief! Each time I’ve come back my pain levels are lower than the time previous and the relief lasts longer after each float. Every time I come out of the RESTPod my pain levels return to zero or near zero! WOW! Thank you True REST.

“It was wonderful…other than saying it is like floating on a cloud it is so indescribable. And to top it off, I slept better than I have in a long time!”

I had my first float yesterday..it was wonderful! I’ve been following you on Facebook since before you opened & have wanted to do it since then! I was excited for the March promotion & convinced a friend to come sign up as well…she loved the promotion as well & we each were getting 2 floats!!!

I was apprehensive about being “enclosed” (even though I knew the dimensions were big)....but as soon as we went back & saw it I was put more at ease. After showering/washing my hair, I got in….SO ROOMY & the water was so warm!

I thoroughly enjoyed the music & light show…it really helped to relax me! I eventually turned the light off & was floating on a cloud in the darkness….other than saying it is like floating on a cloud it is so indescribable.

After what seemed like only a few minutes, the music came back on & my float was over…..I absolutely cannot wait to use my 2nd float & am so interested in membership!

And to top it off, I slept better than I have in a long time! I usually take over the counter sleep aids to help relax me to get to sleep… I don’t even remember closing my eyes to go to sleep last night!!!

Thank you for such a wonderful experience!!!

“By the end of my therapy sessions my shoulder was at about 80% recovery! Definitely recommend for recently injured.”

I recently injured my shoulder lifting weights and was using prescription pain medication for the pain. I went to Phoenix on vacation and my brother in law mentioned to me that I should tryout this thing called float therapy offered by True REST. I entered the REST pod for a 60 minute session and noticed immediate results in pain and range of motion.

The results lasted for about 6 hours and I noticed that the next day my shoulder was feeling extremely better. I continued my float therapy for the next three days at 60 minutes a session and by the end of my therapy my shoulder was about at 80% recovery! Not only was my shoulder feeling better, but my body in general felt recharged and loose and guess what…. No more prescription pain medication!

I definitely recommend this to anyone that has been recently injured or anyone that just needs to relax and get rid of stress. A must do if you are in the Phoenix area!

Phillip, Phoenix AZ

“Most intense, greatest feeling I’ve ever experienced”

When I first got into the tank I didn’t know what to expect and for ~ the first 20 mins or so I didn’t experience anything, until I saw the “lights.” The lights I’m referring to were equivalent to the light show of the North, The Aurora Borealis. The tank filled with this light show and I had to blink to see if my eyes were open or not….......they were. The more I focused on the “lights” more intense they grew and the more intense feeling of euphoria became. The feelings became so intense that I started shaking and to this day it was the most intense, greatest feeling I’ve ever experienced.

“I feel more positive about everything and I can tell I’m in a better mood…Definitely worth the drive!”

I just had my very first float last night, Opening day. My Husband made the appointment for me since we saw a glimpse of it on the news and wanted to know more.

I was a bit nervous to do it because I’ve never done this before but it was amazing! I still feel the affects of it. It relieved a lot of my stress and made me really think about what I wanted in life. Something about it really got me thinking. I feel more positive about everything and I can tell I’m in a better mood. I would love to do it again! I just wish ya’ll were closer to Maricopa:) but it’s definitely worth the drive. My Husband wants to try it now too! So we’ll probably see you guys again soon!

“I Thank God… to have experienced floating ... it feels fabulous… I have had three days and nights of Zero Pain & No Prescriptions”

IT IS A MIRACLE!! I had knee replacement surgery three years ago and I have had chronic pain for three years since the surgery; (much more than before the surgery) - every single day AND night. After the surgery I wasn’t able to work any longer due to the chronic pain. I have been on all types of prescriptions both orally and topical - all they did was to help lessen the pain. My surgeon keeps suggesting more surgery and after this knee replacement experience, I am terrified of additional surgery.

I Thank God I was fortunate enough to have experienced “floating”; not only does it feel fabulous but, I have had three days And nights of Zero Pain - No Prescriptions - No Pain! It is a True Miracle. I have been able to walk every day; twice a day and ride a bike with my son. It has been wonderful to experience life again.

I felt immediate relief after my first float and after four of them I was “pain free”!!!!! I of course sleep better and am able to have a more fulfilled life with my children and able to walk to strengthen my legs

Lucid Dreaming Workshop - Day 6

Posted By: True Rest

Lucid Dreaming Workshop - Day 6 - I had the most vivid dreams last night. They felt very real. I did a few realty checks to test whether or not I was dreaming, but failed. The dream seemed TOO REAL so I didn’t realize I was dreaming. Still remember them as clear as day… I’m getting very close to Lucidity (Nick)

REST helps Chronic Pain

Posted By: True Rest

Health and Clinical Psychology magazine (1985 By Thomas H. Fine & John W. Turner, Jr., Medical College of Ohio, Toledo, Ohio, USA

In the past decade relaxation training has been one of a number of behavioral approaches to the treatment of chronic pain. Recently, flotation REST (Restricted Environmental Stimulation Therapy), which consists of floating in buoyant liquid kept at skin surface temperature in a sound-proof, light-free enclosure, has been used to induce deep states of relaxation and assist in the relaxation training process. This report presents data on patients receiving multimodal treatment for chronic pain, including REST-assisted relaxation training. The patients received individual stress-oriented psychotherapy, biofeedback-assisted relaxation training and REST assisted relaxation training. The use of flotation REST will be discussed through a comparison of the subjective effects of REST relaxation of biofeedback assisted relaxation specifically regarding the perception of pain.

Relief of Chronic Stress

Posted By: True Rest

Treatment in the form of floating in huge tanks of saltwater, so-called ‘floating,’ is effective for chronic stress-related pain. This is shown in a study at Karlstad University, Sweden, led by Professor Torsten Norlander.

The research study shows that individuals suffering from stress-related health problems such as chronic pain, depression, or anxiety are often helped a great deal by floating. The effect remains four months after the treatment period. A control group, which did not participate in floating, experienced no improvement in their health. The study is part of a series at the Human Performance Laboratory and is research project run in collaboration with the Vormland County Council.

The patients who were treated with floating had had health problems for a long time. Several of them had been diagnosed with ‘burn-out.’ They had various stress-related symptoms like pain, exhaustion, depression, and anxiety.
